For the third consecutive year, Topper's Restaurant and Bar in Simpson Bay is organizing the traditional 4th of July (Independence Day in the US) Taste of St. Maarten. Starting around 11am and until the early evening hours, the parking lot and beach next to the restaurant will be transformed in a fun food fair.

At the "Taste" event, 18 restaurants will present taste-sized portions of their menu, live bands will create a lively atmosphere, and various activities will be organized for the tots.

Here's a short update for those of you who are wondering why there haven't been any new 24/7 SXM blog posts lately. The reason is that we've been really, really, really busy with a 'secret' project.

Nah, nothing secret about it: we've simply geared up on our development work for the new Twenty Four Seven SXM website... Some good progress has been made recently, and we are at last getting closer to setting an actual official launch date. Just keep watching this blog for more info, updates will be posted as soon as there is any interesting news to share (or when there is something new for you to play with).

There's no excuse anymore for not having an unforgettable Christmas dinner with the whole family this year, and adding some extra holiday cheer while you're enjoying your St. Maarten winter vacation.

On December 24 (Christmas Eve) and December 25 (Christmas Day), Sopranos restaurant in the Sonesta Maho Arcade invites you to sample its special holiday menu.

For a mere $35pp, the restaurant welcomes you with a nice glass of Champagne. The aperitif is followed by your choice of Butterball turkey glazed with sweet Marsala, honey-pineapple glazed Virginia ham, or Italian sausage with Prosciutto stuffing. Chef Charlie is once again preparing his famed traditional cranberry sauce, mashed potato puffs, and sautéed veggies to accompany your dinner.

SXM New Year's Eve 2009 - Dinner is Served!

Dinner's served at Princess Port de Plaisance Resort... If you're wondering where to celebrate New Year's Eve on St. Maarten, you can now start to make your dinner plans: Giampiero Maietti's La Dolce Vita Italian restaurant and Cyrille's newly opened Sushi Itto have joined forces to bring you two spectacular mouthwatering New Year's Eve menus. Your last chance to enjoy the "Dinner of a Decade." See for yourself:

Sushi Itto is offering TWO SEATINGS for its five course dinner: at 6pm (great if you want to bring the kids) and 9pm. Kicking off the St. Maarten party season this year is none other than the Lady C Floating Bar across from Royal Palm resort in Simpson Bay. Here's another scoop from 24/7 SXM - we just received word of an upcoming talent competition that will be held in St. Maarten this season. The event is going to be held at Tantra Nightclub / Sanctuary, and will consist of nine weekly events. The talent showcase is setup in a similar way to the popular "Idols" TV shows.

Queen's Day 2009 Celebrations in St. Maarten

According to Dutch tradition, the Queen's birthday is celebrated on April 30th. On the island of St. Maarten however, the annual celebration parade is much more colorful - as it coincides with its Carnival festivities.

While the streets of Philipsburg will be lined with revelers who'll watch the participants' colorful costumes and join in with the parade's exuberant Caribbean rhythms, parties in the Maho and Simpson Bay areas will appeal to expats in need of a reminder of what it's like to "Party like a Dutchy."

Whereas The Netherlands celebrates Queen's Day on April 30, the island's festivities will start a day ahead of time: namely on the early evening of Wednesday the 29th, at Sopranos Piano Bar. Complimentary Dutch traditional snacks such as "Bitterballs" and "Firecrackers" will be served from 6pm onwards, and drinks will be on special. Expect to hear a "Smartlap" or two - Dutch language songs from the Holland region - as a backdrop to an impromptu choir of party-goers attempting to remember the words to their favorite songs.

Greg Asadoorian, Sopranos' piano entertainer for the month, will go by his new moniker "As-a-Dutchy" for the night and add a slightly more professional touch to the evening's musical atmosphere.

On Queen's Day itself, Thursday April 30th, Sopranos restaurant will host an evening with traditional Dutch meals in addition to its Italian culinary offerings.

Guest Chef Jeroen van Velzen will prepare classic Dutch dishes such as "Boerenkool," "Stamppot Hutspot" with Dutch Meatballs, "Stoofpotje," and a selection of Dutch seafood. These traditional dishes are accompanied by the customary "Orange Cocktail" and the restaurant will be offering Heineken beer as a 2 for 1 special.

May 1st 2009, serves as the third day of this year's Queen's Day festivities - on the beach this time. Royal well-wishers will gather on the gorgeous sandy beach of Simpson Bay around sunset time. Karakter's event coincides with it's monthly "Beach Buzz" party on the first Friday of every month. The party's setting will be tropical and fun as always, but a special "orange" twist is added to mark the occasion.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to adhere to the special "Code Orange" dress code... Here at Twentyfour Seven SXM, we don't know exactly what that means, but what we do know is that Dutch DJ Raoul will be spinning all of the crowd's club music and dance favorites. As always, Amstel Bright (Orange?) will be on special!

So, find yourself a fitting costume and kick off your flip flops for some barefoot dancing at Karakter on Simpson Bay beach. To get there from Simpson Bay village, follow the main road in the direction of Maho and turn left before the Airport runway. Housemusique Fridays at L'Endroit in Hope Estate

Recently opened "L'Endroit" in Hope Estate, near the Grand Case Airport in St. Martin is a restaurant that turns into a late night party spot once dinner is over.

Friday nights are hosted by DJ Bastouille, whose happy and electrifying sounds could previously be heard at Gwada's Zoo Rock Cafe in Martinique and St. Gilles' Le Mad on the island of Reunion - all the way on the other side of the world in French Polynesia.

Party under the stars: Ladies Night at Bliss Nightclub

Rick Ross and Omarion lead in to SXM Carnival Jouvert

Billed as "Culture Blend" - Tuesday, April 28 will be one hot night of music at St. Maarten's Festival Village. The evening's concert is also a lead in to Jouvert - which will take place in the early hours of the following morning.

Performing live on stage during this St. Maarten Carnival event will be international hip hop stars Rick Ross (Hustlin') and Grammy nominated Omarion (Ice Box), together with Caribbean artists like Denise, Cecile, Peterram and Biggie Eirie. Local St. Maarten and St. Martin artists are expected to join in as well.

The concert starts at 8:30PM sharp. Advance purchase tickets are $60 (VIP Seating), $25 (general admission) and $15 (kids age 6-12). General admission tickets are also sold at the Festival Village gate on the night of the event for $35pp.

The annual SXM Jouvert Jump Up will start as the show ends: it is considered the largest street party parade for any carnival celebration. But in St. Maarten it has the unique twist as it centers on "the Great Salt Pond." Revellers are expected to start lining the streets of Philipsburg along the parade route around 3:00am.

Traditionally the St. Maarten Carnival Development Foundation hosts its Carnival contests, concerts and events on stage at Festival Village. Tuesday April 28th's Culture Blend Concert is no exception - "warming up" revellers for the round the pond jam.

With the start of the music from bands hoisted on trailers, a crowd of thousands sets off from Festival Village down the Walter Nisbeth Road. As the day breaks, spectators along the route can enjoy the creativity of carnival dresses - many participants make their own costumes to add flavour to the celebration.

J'ouvert (pronounced 'joovay' locally) involves calypso and soca bands and their followers dancing to different rhythms. From Walter Nisbeth Road, the parade will be heading in the direction of Sucker Garden. Then on to Over the Bank, Illidge road, and back to the village.

Karakter Beach Bus: Tapas and Jazz on the Beach

Karakter Beach Bus on Simpson Bay Beach is the place to be on Friday nights. Starting this coming Friday April 10th, you can enjoy a Spanish Tapas menu that is served on the beach and $4.00 cocktails all night long.

Rather than serving drinks in plastic cups like most other beach bars, Karakter's cocktails are professionally made and served in regular glasses. That alone should be enough reason to pick the sandy Simpson Bay beach in front of Karakter's bus - the island's favorite spot to watch the evening sunset.

Wine and Cheese Tasting - Sopranos, March 27

Last month's inaugural Wine and Cheese tasting event at Sopranos Restaurant in Maho was a huge success. Sebastian, the restaurant's manager is organizing the monthly event together with Vini d'Italia, the island's largest importer of italian wines.

Each wine tasting will showcase four different wines that are available at Sopranos restaurant. On St. Maarten and St. Martin, Sopranos restaurant is the only place which features the complete and extensive wine list from Vini d'Italia. At the tastings, the wines will be accompanied by a selection of italian cheeses and cold cuts. Price: $30pp.

Event: Deep Recession Dive Bailout

Jason Johnson of St. Maarten Divers, in collaboration with Scuba Fun, is promoting a special 2-day dive package on March 24-25, 2009. The 4-dive package is advertised at a substantial discount, for a total price of $165.00 including gear.

Leading the dives on those days, will be Johnson himself - one of the highest qualified St. Maarten-born instructors. Jason recounts that he "has served as a private dive guide to celebrities, CEO's and some of the wealthiest people that frequent the island on their Mega Yachts." Scuba Fun will be taking its divers on some of the lesser known sites around St. Maarten, and possibly even include a night dive.

Sopranos: celebrate NYE at Maho Resort

Celebrate New Year's Eve with "the family" - at Sopranos restaurant, located in St. Maarten's Maho Arcade. Chef Charlie sent us his special dinner menu, a four course meal that includes free house champagne, an open bar throughout the evening and a free after dinner drink at Sopranos Piano Bar.

It will be hard to make a choice from the many options on Sopranos tasty menu. Here is a sampling of the available dishes on the restaurant's New Year's menu. Our choices would include: Minestrone soup, canelloni with spinach and Ricotta cheese, the delectable "Pollo Sebastiano" stuffed with Prosciutto and Gorgonzola and served in a creamy mushroom sauce, and home made Tiramisu. There simply are too many excellent choices: the crab meat stuffed tiger shrimps sound delicious, and so does the veal ossobuco in tomato sauce. As they say in Italian: "Mi viene l'acquolina in bocca!"

Loterie Farm New Year's Cabaret and Dinner

A double celebration at Loterie Farm on New Year's Eve: the nature preserve at Pic Paradis that includes the unique Hidden Forest Cafe is celebrating its 10th anniversary on December 31st, 2008.

For the occasion, Loterie Farm will be hosting a cabaret evening with a Broadway dance group, followed by a live concert by New York's own Marisela Godbey, Parisian "DJ Ignace" on the twos and fours and topped with a spectacular laser show by Miami Crew Events.

Tickets are priced at €230 for the complete event including set menu, or €35 for the after dinner party with DJ Ignace and Laser Show only.

The scrumptious meal is preceded by an aperitif of Veuve Cliquot Champagne, accompanied by various canapés. Entree: stuffed Mediterranean Cornish hen (poulet de cornouailles farci), served with Dutch asparagus, garlic mashed potatos, and garden salad. The main course is followed by a French cheese platter, dark chocolate tartelettes with fruit, and coffee with Grand Marnier.

Giant Christmas Buffet at Captain Oliver's

Paris Bistro: New Year's Eve Dinner and Fireworks in Maho

Traditionally, the neighborhood surrounding the Sonesta Maho Resort is the place to be to celebrate New Year's Eve in style. This year will be no exception, with many restaurants offering extra festive menus for the occasion, bars and clubs pulling out all stops, and the largest fireworks display on the island to be shown over Maho Beach at midnight.

Paris Bistro, located on the ground floor of Maho Arcade, has put together a terrific three-course dinner menu, click on the image below to enlarge it and see all their offerings.

Here are some higlights: as an appetizer, your choice of oysters - either served warm Rockefeller-style or cold with a shallot-vinaigre sauce and lemon. Other choices include snails in profiterol or foie gras medallions with truffles. Main courses include fresh Saba lobster thermidor, sea scallops & tiger shrimps in puff pastry, or beef Rossini. Melanie, the ever-charming better half of Topper Daboul sent Twentyfour Seven SXM an email to let us know about their restaurant's Christmas special menu:

"Topper's will be serving a choice of Prime Rib or Christmas Honey Baked Ham along with homemade mashed potatoes, butternut squash, broccoli florettes and cranberry sauce. The dinner special is $24 and comes with a complimentary glass of wine. We will have Christmas Carolers on Christmas Eve and we will be having our regular Thursday night Karaoke with Christmas tunes after dinner. Our full menu will also be available both evenings."

Multi-platinum Haitian musical legend Wyclef Jean is scheduled to perform at the Festival Village in Philipsburg on Saturday, January 10th 2009. The world-class musician and former-member of the hip hop trio The Fugees is also an actor and producer. Wyclef Jean's albums have sold more than 30 million copies.

The concert on January 10 is sponsored by Heineken, the company is giving away one free ticket with the purchase of 4 cases of beer. Tickets are priced at $25 and are available for sale at Van Dorp Bookstores and Shipwreck Shops.

LE SELECT Nightclub - Grand Case

Grand Case has a new night club: "Le Select" - the place opened a mere two weeks ago, 24/7 SXM has yet to receive any reviews or get invited to write one ourselves. But we did nonetheless make it onto their ~~unsolicited spam~~ promo list somehow.

Remember, there's NO SMOKING in Clubs on the French side - but if you don't really care, you might as well check out their Ladies Night on Friday December 12 if you're in the neighborhood. Chickies drink for free, men pay 10 Euro at the door...

Otherwise, there's always "Recession Night" on Saturday the 13th. Get in early and pay no cover, or 5 Euro / 5 Dollars including a drink later on. All drinks are five bucks, and bottle service starts at $65 - so pull out all stops, just don't try driving home under the influence. The Gendarmes may be waiting :)

Second Location for The Greenhouse

Popular Philipsburg restaurant "The Greenhouse" - known for the original Two for Tuesday parties - will be opening a new second location on Billy Folly road. The new location is situated next to Atrium Resort, on the access road from Simpson Bay to Pelican Key.

Until a few weeks ago, the new Greenhouse location was occupied by Picante: a Tex-Mex restaurant and lounge. Twentyfour Seven SXM has heard rumors that the new venue will open its doors on or before January 1st, 2009.

2009 St. Maarten / St. Martin Classic Yacht Regatta

The organizers of the Classic Yacht Regatta just announced their program for the first classic regatta of the 2009 Caribbean season. Because of the high bridge and lagoon fees, the upcoming regatta - including all social events - will be moved from to Great Bay rather than Simpson Bay where the regatta used to be held in previous years.

The event will take place from Thursday January 22 until Sunday January 25, 2009.
